It was a gorgeous early fall afternoon with crisp air, golden light, and a hint of that autumn scent that lets you know summer is surely fleeting. After a rainy weekend, I couldn’t have imagined a better day for an engangement session. I walked around campus scouting for locations. I’d walked those sidewalks hundreds of times, often scurrying quickly to class or a meeting with little time to take in the beauty that’s not-so-hidden at Penn State’s main campus, but always seeing it, always appreciating that beauty like this isn’t found everywhere. As I walked up the mall leading to the library, surrounded by well-groomed grass and trees that have survived world wars, a overwhelming feeling of being a visitor rushed over me. I wrestled with the thought that those stately buildings, that golden light streaming through the hundred year-old Elms, they were no longer my home.
But as I met Tim and Brooke and continued to explore the campus that we have all called our own, my visiting status stopped and for a few minutes, I was part of the story again. For these two, Penn State is not just their well-loved alma mater or a great place to visit on football weekends. For Brooke and Tim, Penn State is the setting of the beginning of their love story, the place where they first fell in love, and I’m honored to get to document this moment of their story in the same place where it all began.
I knew it was going to be a great session when we started shooting in this gorgeous light.
They claimed it was unplanned, but it doesn’t get much more “Penn State” than a white dress and a blue shirt! Naturally, I love it. Brooke. You are beautiful. The Alumni Garden is always a great place to shoot, but the light this day was particularly dreamy. To say that I can’t wait to photograph you two on your wedding day is the BIGGEST understatement. We made our way over to Millbrook Marsh, where Tim first asked Brooke to be his wife. Can I just say how much I LOVE locations that have meaning to the couple? High five to whoevers truck this is! Thanks for letting us use it! Dying. You two, just be models already. I’ve shot at the marsh before, but I love how differently it photographs in different light! Before we started shooting, Brooke told me that she and Tim and no idea what to do in front of the camera. I seriously beg to differ. As we were ending the shoot, I watched Brooke and Tim walk through the light on the left and had to have them stop for a few more frames. A few turned into a few dozen. I could shoot in that light for days!
Brooke and Tim, I had such a great time with you and can’t wait to see you in less than a MONTH for your wedding!! If you liked Brooke and Tim’s session and want to keep up to date with future shoots, don’t forget to like Stephanie Dee Photography on Facebook!
