DIY Diaries | Storage Bench File Cabinet

Sometimes on the internet, you come across ideas that are just too good. Something that HAD to come from somewhere else or be the original idea of a professional DIY-er (maybe the only job that would top my list above wedding photographer!)

So with that, I’d like to let you know: THIS POST IS PINTEREST INSPIRED!

Oh yes, Pinterest. The place where DIY craft ideas go to live a million difference reincarnated lives that all begin with someone saying: “I could do that!!”

I first saw this project repinned by one of my friends and I knew that I wanted to do it. In my room/office that’s smaller that the size of most college dorms, almost piece of furniture I have has to pass three tests: cuteness—of course, reusability—I’m a poor college graduate and don’t want to spend money on things I won’t be able to use in two year, and multifunctionality—in a space so small, if it’s not pulling double-duty it’s just not going to work! So once I found this tufted bench from Overstock.com, I knew it was a yes, yes and yes!

My office in literally in the closet of my small bedroom. There is very little room, and to help it feel more open I’m striving to keep my desk as clear as possible, and so I was in desperate need of space to store my files, my desk supplies, mailing materials, small electronics and odd and ends that just had nowhere else to go. This guy is perfect for all of that. It helps divide my “room” from my “office,” gives a little bit of seating, and hides all of my things inside its pretty, tufted exterior.

If you’d like to try making one for yourself, you can find instructions from the original professional DIY-er herself, Ms. Martha Stewart, right here. A small disclaimer: check, chek, and recheck that your bench will be able to fit a hanging file stand inside before ordering. I verified the dimensions of mine on Overstock’s website before ordering, but I wish I had called to make sure. When my bench arrived, it ended up being just a little too short to house the file rack. Thankfully my dad and I came up with a fix and after a little sawing, hammering and stapling, we made it work! I won’t lie, having a designated office storage area makes me feel pretty legit, and I’m so excited to have that clutter out of the way.

Who would ever suspect… …that inside is an office in a box! A few stacking shelves and a desk drawer organizer help me keep everything in place. Can I get an AMEN for Pinterest??

So much more room while editing and so much faster, I’m already saving time not having to wait for apps to open. Steph Dee - Thanks, Kristin! I used this storage ottoman from Overstock.com, but like I mentioned in the post, ended up having to modify it a bit to make it all work. The right sizing will depend on your file hanger!ReplyCancel
